North Cyprus Traffic Insurance

North Cyprus Traffic Insurance is the compulsory third-party liability insurance required for motor vehicles used on public roads in North Cyprus.

If an insured vehicle causes damage to another vehicle, a pedestrian, passenger, parked vehicle, wall, gate, barrier, shopfront or other third-party property, the resulting claim is assessed according to fault, policy terms and the applicable cover limits.

As of July 2026, the main limits and policy periods are:

  • TL 1,200,000 property damage cover
  • TL 8,000,000 bodily injury and death compensation cover
  • 1, 3, 6 and 12-month policy options for eligible vehicles

Compulsory traffic insurance does not cover physical damage to the insured vehicle itself. Damage to the insured vehicle’s bumper, headlight, windscreen, bonnet, door, rim or bodywork is assessed under comprehensive car insurance.

Quick Answer

Traffic insurance is compulsory for motor vehicles used on public roads in North Cyprus. It covers the insured vehicle’s legal liability for qualifying property damage, bodily injury or death caused to third parties, subject to fault, policy terms and the applicable limits. It does not cover the insured vehicle’s own physical damage.

What Is Compulsory Traffic Insurance?

Compulsory traffic insurance is a third-party liability policy. Its purpose is to address the financial responsibility that may arise when the insured vehicle causes damage to another person, another vehicle or property belonging to a third party.

The policy is centred on responsibility towards others. It is not an all-risk vehicle damage policy and it is not a substitute for comprehensive car insurance.

Is Traffic Insurance Compulsory in North Cyprus?

Yes. A motor vehicle used on public roads in North Cyprus must have valid compulsory traffic insurance.

A policy that has expired or has not yet reached its recorded start date and time may leave the vehicle uninsured. For this reason, both the policy dates and the exact start time shown on the issued policy should be checked.

Where Is the Policy Valid?

Cover is subject to the geographical limits stated in the policy. A North Cyprus traffic insurance policy should not automatically be assumed to provide valid cover in South Cyprus or outside North Cyprus.

Drivers planning to cross outside the policy’s stated geographical area should confirm the required insurance arrangements before travelling.

What Does North Cyprus Traffic Insurance Cover?

Depending on the circumstances, fault assessment, policy terms and applicable limits, the following third-party losses may be considered:

  • Damage to another vehicle
  • Damage to a parked vehicle
  • Bodily injury to a pedestrian, passenger or another driver
  • Damage to a wall, garden gate or site entrance
  • Damage to a barrier, road sign or parking installation
  • Damage to a shopfront or another third-party fixed structure
  • Claims involving death or permanent disability

The amount payable is not determined by the existence of damage alone. Fault, evidence, official records, the nature of the loss, policy conditions and the applicable limit are assessed together.

TL 1,200,000 Property Damage Cover

As of July 2026, the applicable property damage limit is TL 1,200,000.

This part of the policy concerns qualifying material damage caused to another vehicle or third-party property. It may include damage to a moving or parked vehicle, wall, gate, barrier, sign, shopfront or other fixed property.

The insured vehicle’s own damage is not included in this limit.

TL 8,000,000 Bodily Injury and Death Cover

As of July 2026, the applicable bodily injury and death compensation limit is TL 8,000,000.

This cover may apply when a traffic accident causes bodily injury or death involving a pedestrian, passenger, driver of another vehicle or another third party.

Bodily injury files are assessed separately according to the nature of the incident, fault, medical documents, official reports, policy terms and the applicable legal framework.

Does Traffic Insurance Cover the Insured Vehicle?

No. Compulsory traffic insurance does not pay for physical damage to the insured vehicle itself.

If both vehicles are damaged in the same accident, the file is separated into two parts:

  • Damage caused to the other vehicle is considered under compulsory traffic insurance and third-party liability.
  • Damage to the insured vehicle’s own bumper, bonnet, headlight, windscreen, rim, door or bodywork is considered under comprehensive car insurance.

What Is Not Covered?

Compulsory traffic insurance is not a general vehicle damage policy. The following are not directly covered as damage to the insured vehicle:

  • Own-vehicle damage in a collision
  • Damage arising from a single-vehicle accident
  • Parking damage to the insured vehicle
  • Damage to the insured vehicle’s glass, headlights, bumper, bodywork, rims or tyres
  • Fire, theft, flood, storm or natural-event damage to the insured vehicle
  • Incidents occurring before the policy start date and time
  • The part of a qualifying claim that exceeds the applicable policy limit

Alcohol-related driving, driving without a valid licence, incorrect declarations, undeclared commercial use and other irregular circumstances may require additional assessment. Depending on the circumstances and applicable rules, recovery from the driver or vehicle owner may also arise.

A North Cyprus Traffic Accident Example

It is 17:40 near Gönyeli Roundabout in Nicosia. Traffic slows suddenly and one vehicle is unable to stop before making contact with the rear of the vehicle ahead.

The damage to the at-fault vehicle’s own front bumper is not covered by compulsory traffic insurance. The rear damage to the other vehicle may be assessed under third-party liability and the TL 1,200,000 property damage limit, subject to fault, evidence and policy conditions.

If the same accident causes bodily injury, the related third-party claim is assessed separately within the TL 8,000,000 bodily injury and death compensation limit and the applicable legal framework.

Traffic Insurance Policy Periods

For eligible vehicles, CAN Sigorta traffic insurance may be issued for:

  • 1 month
  • 3 months
  • 6 months
  • 12 months

The available period depends on the vehicle type, declared use and current system rules. Cover begins at the date and time recorded on the issued policy and ends when the stated policy period expires.

How Is the Premium Calculated?

The premium is not calculated from the registration number alone. The following details may affect the policy:

  • Vehicle type and class
  • Private or commercial use
  • Declared use of the vehicle
  • Policy period
  • Start date and time
  • Current tariff and system rules

Vehicle and owner details must match the registration document. Incorrect vehicle classification or declared use may affect both premium calculation and claim assessment.

Credit Card Payment Is Required

Traffic insurance premium payment is made by credit card. Payment can be completed through the following authorised channels:

  • At a CAN Sigorta branch
  • Through a CAN Sigorta agent
  • Through a secure payment link sent by the CAN Sigorta Operations Centre on WhatsApp
  • Through the CAN Sigorta online traffic insurance system using 3D Secure

Credit card details should never be sent as a message or photograph on WhatsApp. The Operations Centre sends a secure payment link for the cardholder to complete the payment directly.

Payment is an important part of the transaction, but payment alone does not mean that cover has started. The policy must be issued and registered in the system. The start date and time shown on the issued policy determine when cover begins.

Why Is the Policy Start Time Important?

Traffic insurance is valid from the start date and time recorded on the issued policy.

Requesting a quotation, sending documents, opening a WhatsApp conversation or completing payment does not by itself move the start time backwards. An accident that occurs before the recorded start time is not treated as having occurred during the policy period.

This is particularly important when a policy is issued on the same day that the vehicle will be used.

How Does Online Traffic Insurance Work?

For eligible vehicles, the online process follows these main stages:

  1. Vehicle and owner details are entered.
  2. The declared use and requested policy period are selected.
  3. Payment is completed by credit card with 3D Secure verification.
  4. The policy is issued and registered in the system.
  5. The digital policy is delivered with its recorded start date and time.

The issued policy should be checked before the vehicle is used. The vehicle registration, owner details, declared use, policy period and start time must be correct.

Starting the Process through the Operations Centre

The traffic insurance process can also be started through the CAN Sigorta Operations Centre on WhatsApp.

The following documents are generally sufficient for an initial assessment:

  • Vehicle registration document
  • Vehicle owner’s identity card or passport
  • Existing policy details, if available
  • Driver information where required
  • Requested policy period

After the vehicle type, declared use and requested period are reviewed, the Operations Centre can send a secure card payment link. Card details must not be shared in the WhatsApp conversation.

What Should You Do after a Traffic Accident?

Personal safety comes first. If anyone is injured, contact the police and emergency medical services without delay.

Where it is safe to do so, record:

  • The position of the vehicles
  • Vehicle registration numbers
  • The damaged areas
  • The road and surrounding conditions
  • The other party’s details
  • Policy information
  • The date and exact time of the accident
  • Police reports and other official documents

Unless safety requires the vehicles to be moved immediately, the scene should be documented clearly before their positions are changed.

How Is a Traffic Insurance Claim Assessed?

A traffic insurance claim is not assessed from the repair invoice alone. The following points are considered together:

  • Whether the policy was valid
  • The policy start date and time
  • The accident date and time
  • Vehicle and driver details
  • Declared vehicle use
  • How the accident occurred
  • Fault allocation
  • The nature and value of the third-party loss
  • Whether bodily injury occurred
  • Official documents and supporting evidence
  • The applicable policy limits

The fact that a third party has suffered a loss does not mean that every amount claimed is paid automatically. Liability, evidence, policy terms and limits remain part of the assessment.

Policy Renewal

Traffic insurance is issued for a defined period. When that period ends, cover ends unless a new policy has been issued.

The renewal process should be started before expiry so that the vehicle is not left without valid insurance. The new policy’s start date and time should be checked after issue.
