AI-Powered Traffic Cameras Go Live in TRNC on 15 August 2025 – Speeding, Seat Belts, Smoking, Insurance Checks and More
A New Era in TRNC Traffic Monitoring
Starting 15 August 2025, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will implement AI-powered traffic cameras across the country. These advanced systems will not only detect speeding, but also failure to wear seat belts, smoking while driving, mobile phone use, running red lights, and lane violations in real-time.
The new cameras will be installed at many locations, including 4-lane roads, and will use license plate recognition to automatically check for missing or invalid documents such as road tax, inspection, and especially insurance validity. Vehicles without valid insurance will be detected instantly, and legal action will be initiated.
Instant SMS Notifications:
When a violation is detected, the vehicle owner will receive an SMS notification. While this will not be considered an official legal notice, it will help drivers become aware of violations quickly.
Including Rental and South Cyprus Vehicles:
The system will also track rental vehicles and those entering from South Cyprus. Violation data will be sent instantly to border checkpoints, where necessary actions will be taken upon exit.
A New Standard for Road Safety:
This initiative aims to reduce accidents, injuries, and property damage while enhancing security even in areas without traditional CCTV coverage.
Update on AI Camera Implementation
14 August 2025
Dear Customers,
We previously announced that our new AI camera system would be in effect starting 15 August 2025. While the system itself is ready, the installation of the required warning signs has been delayed.
To ensure compliance with regulations and to give everyone fair notice, the official enforcement date will be postponed until the warning signs are fully in place.
We will announce the new start date as soon as possible. In the meantime, please note that while the cameras may be operational for testing purposes, no enforcement actions will be taken until the signs are installed and the new date is communicated.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
