Side Damage While Passing a Stopped Minibus in Central Kyrenia

In central Kyrenia, damage to another vehicle can begin when a stopped minibus temporarily interrupts one traffic line and following drivers move into the neighbouring lane.

The risk becomes more visible between 16:30 and 18:30. Traffic progresses in short movements, roadside stops remain active, and the available space beside larger vehicles changes within seconds.

The traffic is slow.

The lateral distance is limited.

At 17:25, a vehicle travels through central Kyrenia.

A minibus stops ahead to collect passengers.

The following driver slows.

The neighbouring lane appears to be moving.

The driver begins moving sideways to pass the minibus.

Another vehicle is already travelling beside the rear section.

The lane-change movement continues.

The first vehicle’s front wing and door area reach the neighbouring vehicle’s rear door and quarter panel.

Contact occurs.

The neighbouring vehicle may sustain damage along the rear door, wheel-arch edge and quarter panel. The lane-changing vehicle may be affected around the front wing, side mirror and front-door edge.

The defining factor is not traffic density alone.

It is the decision to leave a blocked traffic line before the full side position of the neighbouring vehicle has been established.

The local damage sequence is usually consistent:

Traffic slows behind a stopped vehicle.

The driver identifies movement in the next lane.

A sideways manoeuvre begins.

Another vehicle remains within the blind or partially visible area.

The available side distance closes.

Damage transfers to the neighbouring vehicle.

In dense Kyrenia traffic, low speed can create a false sense of safety. The vehicles may be moving slowly, but the limited spacing leaves little room for an incomplete mirror check or a late steering correction.

The first contact point, the direction of the scrape, the vehicles’ positions and the stopped minibus may help explain how the incident developed. Responsibility is assessed from the complete circumstances and available evidence rather than from traffic density alone.

This local risk is examined within the Central Kyrenia Traffic Insurance Guide. Wider third-party damage patterns across the region are covered by the Kyrenia Traffic Insurance Guide, while island-wide liability risks are addressed in the North Cyprus Traffic Insurance Guide. Damage caused to the neighbouring vehicle is assessed under the applicable terms and limits of North Cyprus Third-Party Insurance.

In central Kyrenia traffic, side damage often begins not because vehicles are travelling quickly, but because a temporary obstruction causes one driver to treat a narrow neighbouring gap as an available lane.
